University of Oregon

Sustainability Council

In 2009 the UO established an Interim Sustainability Council "to guide and promote UO sustainability initiatives to achieve national prominence in research, education, service, and campus operations."

To this end, the Council will work with faculty, administration and external partners to:

  1. Advise the President, Provost, Vice-Presidents and College Deans regarding future programs and opportunities, strategic investments and policies.
  2. Build the capacity of faculty and staff to conduct and lead sustainability projects.  Members of the Council may implement this through the Meyer Fund Faculty Leadership Group.
  3. Enhance cross-campus communication and coordination of sustainability activities in education, research and campus operations.  This includes sharing information about pertinent OUS, regional and national efforts with potential impacts or opportunity for UO programs.
  4. Ensure proper UO representation at system-wide, regional and national meetings related to sustainability.  This involves building capacity of faculty, staff and students to conduct this work as well as identifying key meetings and appropriate representatives.
  5. Assist faculty and administrators in developing plans, messages and implementation strategies for sustainability initiatives, including the Big Ideas.  This may include developing new approaches to providing program support for projects and programs that span beyond the bounds of our colleges, centers, institutes, and administrative units.
