The vision of University of Oregon’s Transportation Services department includes increased use of sustainable transportation options to our campus.

Commute Survey

The UO began conducting commute surveys in 2006 in an evolving partnership between the Office of Sustainability, Campus Planning, and now Transportation Services. The survey, along with the department’s new 2020-2025 strategic plan, is used to track progress, recognize trends, and refine transportation options, education, outreach, and infrastructure needs.

Student Commute Mode

Non-motor    Bus    Drive alone    Car (other)    Other

Results show that walking and bicycling are the top travel choice for students. On average only 10.9% of students drive alone to campus. Nearly half of UO students live within one mile of campus, greatly reducing their need to drive. The adjacent chart illustrates students’ primary travel modes from the 2019 survey.

Staff/Faculty Commute Mode

Non-motor    Bus    Drive alone    Car (other)    Other

Results show that driving alone is still the top travel choice (47.5%) for employees, followed by 19% choosing to bike to campus. This represents the fact that employees typically live farther from campus than students. The adjacent chart illustrates employees’ primary travel modes from the 2019 survey.
